rita
I smelled a smell and suddenly missed you.
All that we shared over all my life came flooding back, first in trickles, then in waves
Until finally it knocked me on my back.
And I lay here, sobbing, on the sand
With thousands of tiny shells of memory cutting into my skin.
They leave marks that will never fade.
You always said goodbye and goodbye and goodbye
So many times
Like you didn’t want to go
And were surprised at yourself when you put down the phone.
It seemed too soon to really say goodbye.
