a smile from the eyes
I drank my tea black,
And talked of past tragedies and secret dreams.
And your words flowed with ease
As though they’d waited for someone
Who’d waited for them.
And, wrapped in the still night,
We laughed at the same moments,
And I ached for your remembered pains.
We shared a familiarity
That should have taken years to build.
But somehow we found -
Strangely, unexpectedly -
A hand held out in the darkness,
And a smile that started from the eyes.
