your open eyes
Do you run from shadows now?
Do they haunt your every step?
I see you, you know.
The eyes that hide behind the clouds,
That watch you sleep,
Watch you shiver.
The eyes that fling their knives at your back
At each tripping word or shaken imagined moment,
Every apprehensive glance and fear of scrutiny.
They glare at you as they pile stones in your path,
And snigger up their sleeves as you trip and fall.
Eyes of eerie familiarity
Watching from behind bushes,
Waiting to pounce.
Do you dare to defy them?
You can bend your back to the task,
But if all you do is lift the burden to your own shoulders
The weight will drive you deeper into the ground.
